Creatives of Color Oregon (COCO): DP Voices

Summary
OMPA invites the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community to join us for a chill conversation with some very talented DPs (Director of Photography) coming from diverse backgrounds. Through a discussion led by local DP Adolfo Cantú-Villarreal, we want to celebrate these creatives who are piloting change in the production industry. Through hearing about their journeys, we hope to inspire upcoming creatives and professionals with similar backgrounds. There will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the event, as well as a giveaway!

MEET THE SPEAKERS
ADOLFO CANTÚ-VILLARREAL is a Mexican Filmmaker and Cinematographer currently based in Portland, Oregon.
Born and raised in the mountains of Monterrey, México — he fell in love with cinema from a very young age. Shortly after that, he developed a magnetic pull towards any and all cameras and their ability for storytelling. Since then, he's been searching and creating films that captivate and resonate. His visual style seeks cinematic poetry in every frame; images that go beyond reality, images that inspire a feeling or reaction.
Adolfo believes in the richness of diversity. In his projects and through collaborations, he strives to tell the stories of the underrepresented and to showcase the artistry and talents of people of different backgrounds both in front and behind the camera.
His films have screened in festivals around the world and featured in VICE, PBS, ICON Germany, The New York Times -- his brand work includes Volvo, Nike, Ampere, Skullcandy, Mazda, among others.
His cat Lucy is more famous than him. He's ok with that.
MATTHEW HAYES is a Portland-based editor-turned-DP with a background in commercials and short films. He believes that filmmaking (like the other fine arts) is a craft, and it's our duty as craftspeople and artists to push the medium forward with life and empathy. His goal is to show the world as it deserves to be seen, with truth and love.
SIKA STANTON is a filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. In 2019, she joined IATSE Local 600 and has worked on a number of episodic, commercial, and feature film projects including Shrill and Documentary Now!. Her short docs screened at the 42nd and 43rd annual Portland International Film Festival and she has made work for a range of clients from Oregon Public Broadcasting and Clif Bar to Monocle Films.
SUMMER LUU (she/her/they/them) is a first generation Vietnamese-American film director, photographer, DP, video editor and producer based in Portland, Oregon. With a background in photojournalism, their work has a candid yet disruptive documentary style of approach. They have worked for in house agencies, production houses, brands, studios and local non profits. Drawing creative inertia from personal experiences, their passion is to connect and collaborate with individuals on a liberated and unbound artistic level. Summer strives to amplify the narratives of underprivileged young artists, womxn and people of color. Seeking to bring joy, equality and authenticity to all. Inspired by the truth and obsessed with documenting real life and the human condition.
